MNI BRIEF: Canada Will Respond Forcefully To Any Trump Tariff
MNI (OTTAWA) - Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Friday his government will respond immediately and forcefully if U.S. President Donald Trump moves ahead tomorrow as he's pledged on a 25% tariff, tensions that have pulled the dollar to its weakest in years, and which the BOC says could trigger a recession.
“We won’t back down,” Trudeau said before a meeting with provincial leaders. “If tariffs are implemented against Canada, we will respond.”
Americans will feel the pain including higher prices and curbing supplies of strategic resources, Trudeau said while warning Canadians about their own troubles ahead. “I won’t sugarcoat it: Our nation could be facing difficult times in the coming days and weeks.” (See: MNI INTERVIEW: BOC To Cut Faster And Deeper In Trade War) Mark Carney, the leading candidate to replace Trudeau in a March leadership contest, said today there's no doubt Canada will retaliate with dollar-for-dollar tariffs.
