MNI BRIEF: China May Be Slow To Open Borders, Advisors Say

BEIJING (MNI)

China may be cautious before it reopens its borders year, despite concerns that it may miss out on an economic boost if other countries in the region resume international trade first, policy advisors in Beijing told MNI.

Foreign Minister Wang Yi announced last Saturday that China would roll out vaccine passports in 2021, promoting speculation China would aim to re-open its borders fairly soon. But concerns over Covid-19 infections coming in from abroad and eroding China's success in restoring normal life may prompt officials to move cautiously, particularly given the slow progress of the country's vaccine programme, said Lu Xiang, a U.S. expert at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

Only about 3.5% of China's population had been vaccinated by early March, a far cry from the targeted 40% by June, advisors noted.
