MNI BRIEF: China Should Spotlight Biodiversity In Investment

MNI (Singapore)

Chinese regulators should formulate specific methods and disclosure requirements for assessing the impact of projects on biodiversity and guide more funds to biodiversity protection, Ma Jun, director of the Green Finance Committee, China Society for Finance and Banking told a UN conference on the subject Friday.

Financial institutions should pay attention to transitional risks amid China's policy shifts to highlight protecting biodiversity, which could lead to some business closure and defaults, said Ma. After the Chinese government implemented policies to protect ecological reserves, some real estate, factories and even hydropower projects in the reserve were shut down, he added.

More than 100 countries including China pledged on Wednesday to put the protection of habitats at the heart of their government decision-making during the conference hosted in the city of Kunming.
