MNI BRIEF: EC Head: EU Will Make Protocol Work; To Be Flexible

BRUSSELS (MNI)

The EU remains determined to make the Northern Ireland Protocol work, but Brussels will also be flexible in trying to find a solution together with the UK, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Thursday. "We are determined to make the protocol work for the benefit of everyone in Northern Ireland," she said.

The Commission president said that the EU had been flexible in its approach and would continue to be flexible on 'specific topics', but insisted that the Withdrawal Agreement had to be implemented. She pointed to the disputes settlement mechanism contained in the Trade and Cooperation Agreement with the UK and which allows remedial measures to be taken, insisting that there would be no unilateral measures.
