MNI BRIEF: ECB Exploring CBDC System Compatibility: Panetta

LONDON (MNI)

The European Central Bank has started preliminary work testing compatibility between a digital euro and existing central bank settlement services (such as TIPS), Executive Board member Fabio Panetta said Friday.

The interconnection between 'decentralised technologies, such as distributed ledgers, and centralised systems', the use of payment-dedicated blockchains with electronic identity and assessing functionalities of hardware devices that could enable offline transactions, guaranteeing privacy, will all be tested and in the experimentation work, he said.

Panetta said the ECB will take "the necessary time to explore all aspects of different options", whether they are technically feasible, comply with the principles and policy objectives of the Eurosystem and whether they satisfy the needs of prospective users.
