MNI BRIEF: EU Announces EUR1.2 Bn Fresh Aid for Ukraine

(MNI) Brussels

The EU Commission Monday announced EUR1.2 billion in new emergency loans and grants to Ukraine to help the country meet its financing needs during the current tensions with Russia. In a statement, the Commission called on EU countries and the EU Parliament to approve the package as soon as possible in order to allow the rapid disbursement of a first tranche of EUR600 million.

The Commission said it would also almost double its bilateral assistance to Ukraine in grants this year, with a further €120 million to underpin its state-building and resilience efforts. President Ursula von der Leyen said in a statement: “Let me be clear once more: Ukraine is a free and sovereign country. It makes its own choices. The EU will continue to stand by its side.”
