MNI BRIEF: EU-China Summit To Focus On Ukraine Crisis

Source: Usual EU-China Trade Issues Will Be Of Secondary Importance

(MNI) Brussels

The Russia-Ukraine conflict will be made the top issue at Friday’s EU-China Summit, with EU officials saying they will make an all-out effort to discourage China from supporting Russia, an EU official close to the talks told MNI.

“The EU cannot confirm or deny allegations that Russia has asked for assistance and that China is willing to provide it,” the source said, while he added that the EU would rather focus efforts on dissuading China from any future such assistance. “It’s also about supporting initiatives to end the war and we will also call on China to condemn the attack as a violation of international law,” the official added.

In contrast to previous EU-China summits, the usual EU-China trade spats are likely to be of secondary importance, the source confirmed.
