MNI BRIEF: EU Gentiloni: Optimistic For H1 G20 Tax Agreement

Gentiloni: If Global Tax Deal Tax EU Will Not 'Duplicate' Digital Levy At EU Level

BRUSSELS (MNI)

There is a sense of optimism that a global agreement on taxation could be reached in the first half of 2021, following the recent proposal from US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, EU Economic Affairs Commissioner Paolo Gentiloni said Friday following the latest Eurogroup video meeting, hoping some advance could be made in coming weeks.

"If this will be the case, we will discuss what kind of proposal we will use to feed our own resources," including any digital levy, he added. As part of its plan to increase its so-called own resources in order to finance the Recovery and Resilience Fund, the EU has proposed a digital levy and a carbon border adjustment mechanism.
