MNI BRIEF: EU Hahn: 2023, 2024 Seen Peak Years For RRF Funding

Both 2023 and 2024 are likely to prove the peak years for disbursements, and therefore funding, under the EU’s NextGeneration programme, Budget Commissioner Johannes Hahn said Tuesday. In answer to a question from MNI, Hahn explained the reason for the less-than-expected €50 billion funding plan for H1 this year, which the Commission recently estimated to be €50 billion.

“EUR75bn is quasi approximately what we need for six months,” he said. “If we have 50 billion for the first semester, it’s an indication according to the expected disbursement profile,” he added, although noting that bill issuance offered sufficient leeway.

Looking further out, Hahn said he expect a peak in issuance next year and the year after, although that was in part down to member states RRF milestones.
