MNI BRIEF:Eurozone Headline Inflation Slows, Core Edges Higher

(MNI) London

Eurozone headline inflation slowed markedly in June, but core inched higher, providing something for European Central Bank hawks to hang their hats on.

Inflation fell to 5.5% across the bloc, down from 6.1% in June. Core, which surprised to the downside last month, edged up to 5.4%, largely as a result of higher German prices.

Inflation is slowing now across most countries in the bloc, with only Slovakia now seeing double-digit inflation. Three countries, Spain, Belgium and Luxembourg, saw inflation dip below 2.0%.

While the increase in core inflation was expected, it rose by less than some had feared, touching 5.4% after 5.3% in May. However, there will be concern at the ECB that services inflation again rose, up 0.6% m/m and 5.4% y/y vs 5.0% in May.
