MNI BRIEF: Ex-Fed's Lacker Sees Inflation Surprise Danger

There is a danger the Federal Reserve could be caught off balance by a surprise inflation surge, ex-Richmond Fed President Jeffrey Lacker told MNI, pointing to a lack of clarity from policy makers as to how QE and low rates work to support the economy.

"I worry that without a firm handle on the transmission mechanism they're not going to see inflation coming and it's going to break out," said Lacker, expressing more of a contrarian view as other former senior officials said the Fed would wait until SEP forecasts showed a consistent rise in inflation before raising rates. Meanwhile, factory gate price increases reached a near 2.5-year high in MNI's Chicago Business Barometer.
