MNI BRIEF: Global Billionaire Tax Hard To Coordinate - Yellen
U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen spoke at a press conference during G20 meetings in Rio de Janeiro.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said Thursday that tax policy is hard to coordinate globally, as Brazil tries to build a consensus about a 2% minimum tax on the wealth of the world's billionaires at G20 meetings the country is hosting.
"The United States is strongly supportive of progressive taxation and making sure that very wealthy, high-income individuals pay their fair share," she said at a press conference during the G20 meetings in Rio de Janeiro.
"But tax policy is very difficult to coordinate globally. And we don't see a need or really think it's desirable to try to negotiate a global agreement on that. We think that all countries should make sure that their taxation systems are fair and progressive," she added.
