MNI BRIEF: Survival Timeframe Unclear For Half of Canada Firms

(MNI) OTTAWA
OTTAWA (MNI)

Half of Canadian business owners aren't sure how long they can last before considering closure or bankruptcy, a government survey showed Friday, underscoring BOC Governor Tiff Macklem's view in a recent MNI interview that slack in the economy is a bigger risk than a wave of inflation.

The figure is even higher than the response to a similar question in Statistics Canada's last such report back in November, which found that 30.4% of firms were unsure how long they could go before closure, bankruptcy, or changing employment levels.

The survey also found 14% of firms planned to raise prices in the next three months, down from 18% in the last report.
