MNI BRIEF: Inflation Expectations Mixed In May - NY Fed Survey
U.S. inflation expectations were mixed in May, according to the New York Fed's survey of Survey of Consumer Expectations, while the share of those expecting to be financially better off reached the highest level since mid-2021.
Median inflation expectations at the one-year horizon declined a tenth to 3.17% in May, while at the three-year horizon expectations were unchanged at 2.76%. Expectations at the five-year horizon increased two tenths to 3.00%. (See: MNI INTERVIEW: Fed Set For One Or Two Cuts This Year - Bullard)
Mean unemployment expectations—or the mean probability that the U.S. unemployment rate will be higher one year from now—increased to 38.6% from 37.2%, and is now above the 12-month trailing average of 37.8%.
