MNI BRIEF: Lagarde, Schnabel, Lead BBK Chief Nagel Congrats

(MNI) LONDON
(MNI) Frankfurt

European Central Bank president Christine Lagarde on Monday tweeted her congratulations to former Bundesbank Executive Board member Joachim Nagel following reports that he will succeed outgoing central bank boss Jens Weidmann from January next year.

Nagel, who was appointed Deputy Head of Banking on 1 November 2020, said in a 2013 interview that the turmoil surrounding that year’s taper tantrum had been a helpful reminder to market participants that non-standard monetary policy measures will not be used in perpetuity. Lagarde was joined by Executive Board member Isabel Schnabel - herself initially seen as a candidate to replace Weidmann after his upcoming departure was announced.
