MNI BRIEF: Loan Demand Down, Credit Tighter-Dallas Fed Survey

(MNI) WASHINGTON

Demand for loans shrank and credit conditions tightened in a Dallas Fed survey of banking conditions released Monday that indicated the sector's March turmoil is having ripple effects on the economy.

"Loan demand declined for the seventh period in a row, and most bankers expect a further deterioration over the next six months," the survey of 63 banks conducted from June 13-21 showed, flagging particular concerns over commercial real estate, which saw the largest increase in loan pricing.

"When asked about credit tightening by commercial real estate category, most bankers reported at least some tightening over the past six weeks, with up to 26% classifying the tightening as 'significant," the survey said.(See MNI INTERVIEW: Global Banks Over-Levered-Ex-Basel Head Ignves)
