MNI BRIEF: Norges Bank On Hold "For Some Time", Worried by FX
MNI ((MNI) London) - MNI (LONDON) - Norges Bank left the policy rate on hold at 4.5% as expected on Thursday, saying that it was likely to stay there for some time and that it was "particularly concerned" about inflation risks from krone weakness.
In the absence of new economic forecasts, Governor Ida Wolden Bache did not repeat her previous guidance that the policy rate was likely to stay at 4.5% "to the end of the year" and instead said simply that it would "likely be kept at the current level for some time ahead."
The policy statement said that Norges Bank's Monetary Policy and Financial Stability Committee cited risks of both premature and delayed easing.
Krone weakness was highlighted in the economic analysis, with the Committee "particularly concerned" about the inflation risks the currency posed. The policy rate may even have to be raised if inflation stays higher for longer, it said.
