MNI BRIEF: Unemployment Down in Feb Across OECD

Unemployment across the OECD area edged lower in February, dipping to 6.7% from the 6.8% recorded in January, data published Monday by the Paris-based organisation showed. The jobless rate remains 1.4pp above the level seen in February 2020 before the start of the pandemic. Youth unemployment eased as well to 13.7%, down from 14.0% seen in January.

The unemployment rate remained stable in the eurozone, at 8.3%, while the US registered a small decline to 6.2% and the Canadian unemployment rate decreased to 8.2%. March data suggests further declines in the US and Canada. While Australia saw the largest downtick in the jobless rate to 5.8%, Israel recorded an increase to 5.1%. Japan (2.9%) and Mexico (4.5%) had stable unemployment rates in February.
