MNI DATA BRIEF: UK Retail Hopeful for April: CBI Survey

MNI (London)
LONDON (MNI)

UK retail sales were again disappointing in March, declining at the same as Feb as the country remains in lockdown, although firms are more optimistic regarding sales in April due to the planned reopening of non-essential businesses, according to Ben Jones, Principal Economist at the CBI. "Expectations point to a fairly muted recovery, especially when considering that base effects will tend to flatter annual growth next month, given the historic drop in sales in April 2020.", Jones added.

According to the latest CBI survey, retail sales remained at February's level of -45 in March, mainly driven by sharp declines in sectors such as clothing, footwear, furniture & carpets and department stores. Orders placed upon suppliers only improved marginally to -33 in March, but orders are forecast to rebound in April.
