MNI BRIEF: Slovak CenBank Deputy Named Interim Prime Minister

(MNI) LONDON

Slovakia President Zuzana Caputova has tapped Ludovit Odor, deputy governor at the Bank of Slovakia, to lead a new interim government as prime minister, it was reported Sunday.

Odor joined the central bank in 2018 and regularly accompanies Governor Peter Kazimir – regarded as a monetary policy hawk – to meetings of the European Central Bank's governing Council in Frankfurt (see MNI SOURCES: ECB To Hold Rates At Peak Into 2024).

Kazimir, a former finance minister, faces calls to resign after he was ordered to pay a EUR100,000 fine or serve two years in jail following his conviction for bribery by Slovakia’s Special Criminal Court last month. He strongly denies the charges and has vowed to clear his name in either a Slovakian or EU court.
