U.S. weekly jobless claims fell sharply in the latest week, plunging nearly 200,000 to a post-pandemic start low 576,000 in a sign that the labor market may finally be healing after a long hit from the Covid slump.
The level of claims remains elevated but is a sharp improvement from recent readings, corroborating Fed Chair Jerome Powell's assessment Wednesday that the economy is entering a stronger growth phase. The country added nearly 1 million jobs last month, the latest official data showed.
