MNI BRIEF: Tailwinds At Last For UK Consumer: GfK

LONDON (MNI)

UK consumer optimism rose to the highest level for a year in March, boosted by a well-received budget, the successful vaccination program and roadmaps in place for ending lockdowns, Joe Staton, GfK's Client Strategy Director said, who also told MNI that at last there were some 'tailwinds' to point to.

Consumer's opinion over their personal finances -- for GfK's Staton the key ingredient to improved sentiment -- in the next year rose significantly as well by 6pt to 10, marking the highest level in three-years. "If this improved mood translates into spending, it might help reverse some of the economic damage the UK has suffered." Staton added. The 8pt uptick of the major purchases index, indeed signals more willingness to spend, he noted.

Overall consumer confidence improved to -16 in March, up from -23 seen in February and marking a 1-year high, data published Friday showed, as all major categories saw improvements in March. Household's assessment of economic situation in the next 12 months saw the largest boost of 13pt, following a strong reading in February as well.
