MNI BRIEF: UK CPI Reweight To Reflect Covid Behaviour Change

MNI (London)
LONDON (MNI)

In normal times, the UK CPI basket weights would be adjusted using data for household final consumption expenditure (HHFCE) for 2019. However, the Covid-19 pandemic has led to a significant change in consumer behaviour and consumption patterns and is reflected in the 2021 inflation basket of goods, Sam Beckett, ONS head of economic statistics said Monday

While 729 items were left unchanged, 17 items were added and 10 were removed, Beckett noted. The main items added include hand sanitisers, smartwatches, electric and hybrid cars and casual clothing. White chocolate bars, ground coffee and Axminster/Wilton carpets have been removed.
