MNI BRIEF: UK Pay Awards Remain Subdued In February

LONDON (MNI)

UK employers remain cautious over pay awards, with many uncertain of the outcome of any 2021 reviews, said XpertHR's Sheila Attwood Wednesday. Headline pay awards were unchanged at 1.0% in the 3 months to February, the latest XpertHR survey showed. Employers expect low pay awards and further pay freezes to continue, with a median pay award of 2.0% over the year expected.

The survey found that 55.5% of employees expect a pay rise in 2021, while 7.7% anticipate no increase. Companies are taking a "wait and see" approach regarding the annual pay review with the pandemic still overshadowing their decision-making.

In February, the majority of pay awards were lower in a matched sample with 80% of settlements lower than a year ago for the same employee group, Attwood noted. Pay freezes remain common this February, making up one-third (34%) of settlements.
