MNI BRIEF: US April Core PCE YoY Rate Lowest In 3 Years
(MNI) WASHINGTON
The Federal Reserve's preferred measure of inflation, the PCE price index, was 0.257% in April and 0.249% excluding food and energy prices, in line with analyst expectations. From a year ago, inflation was 2.7% in April and core inflation was 2.8%, the lowest since March 2021, the Bureau of Economic Analysis said Friday. Personal income rose 0.3% in the month and spending grew 0.2%.
Fed officials have said in recent days inflation appears to be continuing its downward trend after the first three months of the year, bolstering their view that interest rates are well positioned. Still, there are also policymakers who worry policy might not be sufficiently restrictive. (See: MNI INTERVIEW: Fed's Next Move Could Still Be A Hike-Posen)
