Small business optimism plummeted in December, the National Federation of Small Business said Tuesday, falling below trend for the first time since May. The advocacy group's Small Business Optimism Index fell 5.5 points last month to 95.9 when markets had expected 100.3, falling below the average index value since 1973 of 98.0.

"This month's drop in small business optimism is historically very large, and most of the decline was due to the outlook of sales and business conditions in 2021," NFIB chief economist Bill Dunkelberg said in a statement.

The NFIB's Uncertainty Index declined 8 points to 82.
