MNI BRIEF: US Inflation Expectations Lowest In 3 Years-NY Fed

U.S. inflation expectations fell across the board in December, according to the New York Fed's survey of consumers, with short, medium, and longer term readings all showing decreases. Median inflation expectations for the year-ahead fell 0.4ppt to 3.0%, the lowest level recorded since January 2021.

The three-year-ahead measure decreased 0.4ppt to 2.6% and the five-year gauge edged down 0.2ppt to 2.5%, the New York Fed said. Median home price growth expectations remained unchanged at 3.0%, remaining well above the series 12-month trailing average of 2.4%. Earnings growth and spending growth expectations also decreased slightly to their lowest recorded levels since 2021, while expectations about credit access and households’ financial situation turned less pessimistic, the NY Fed survey showed.
