MNI BRIEF: US Retail Sales Surge In January

MNI (Washington)
WASHINGTON (MNI)

The pace of U.S. retail sales skyrocketed in January after a weak December holiday season, with growth seen in every category. Total sales rose 5.4% through the month, the Commerce Department said Wednesday, outpacing market expectations, but in line with the MNI Reality Check published earlier this week.

Sales at motor vehicle and parts dealers rose 3.1% in January following a smaller 2% increase in December. Ahead of the release, Charlie Chesbrough, senior economist at Cox Automotive, told MNI vehicles sales would likely hit a 12-month high in January. Gasoline station sales were up 4%, slowing from a 6.5% gain last month. Excluding motor vehicle sales, retail sales were up 5.9%. Excluding vehicle and gas station sales, retail sales rose 6.1% in January.

Restaurant sales were up 6.9% in January following a 4.6% decline in December but were still down 16.6% from a year earlier.
