The Chicago Business Barometer plunged by 12.4 points to 35.4 in April, hitting
the lowest level since Mar 2009. Among the main five indicators, New Orders
(24.2) and Production (25.3) registered the largest declines, with both indices
falling to 1980's levels. Supplier Deliveries (78.9) remained elevated in Apr,
rising to the highest level since Apr 1974. Firms noted a severe negative
COVID-19 impact on both demand and production. There was, however, anecdotal
evidence of improved delivery times from China. Nevertheless, more than 90% of
respondents said they have made changes to mediate supply chain issues.
