  • The Chicago Business Barometer rose to 75.2 in May, outpacing market expectations of a decline to 69.0
  • This is the highest level since Nov 1973 and the third consecutive increase.
  • May's increase was led by a sharp rise of New Orders (80.0) to the strongest reading since Dec 1983 and Order Backlogs (80.7) which surged to a 70-year high.
  • Supplier Deliveries (82.3) surpassed Mar's recent peak during the current crisis and increased to its highest level since Mar 1974.
  • Meanwhile, Employment (49.8) slipped back to contraction territory and Production (70.6) eased in May.
  • Companies continuously reported supply chain disruptions, including transportation issues and raw material shortages, which led to longer lead times, higher prices and production constraints.
  • Factory gate prices eased slightly in May, but remain at an elevated level of 88.4.
  • The majority (66.7%) is looking for ways to mitigate the risks of logistics and component shortages and 51.3% are passing on higher costs to customers.
