MNI DATA BRIEF: German Consumer Sentiment Steady - Gfk

Following recent increases, German consumer sentiment is set to stagnate in August, data published Wednesday by Gfk showed. Consumer confidence is forecast to remain at -0.3 in August, unchanged from July. While economic and income expectations declined slightly, the propensity to buy saw a monthly gain. However, "despite the current stagnation of consumer confidence, the domestic economy will make a positive contribution to overall economic development in the second half of the year." said Rolf Bürkl, a GfK consumer expert.

Rising infection rates and a stagnation of the vaccination progress " is currently preventing any further significant increase as it pertains to consumer sentiment", Bürkl added. Moreover, consumers expect inflation to rise further, which has a negative effect on consumer sentiment, the report noted.
