MNI DATA BRIEF: US Easter Retail Spend Seen Breaking Records

MNI (Washington)
WASHINGTON (MNI)

The average U.S. consumer plans to spend roughly USD179.70 this Easter, the National Retail Federation said Wednesday, the highest level on record. About 79% of Americans will celebrate Easter and spend an estimated USD21.6 billion combined, down just slightly from last year's USD21.7 billion.

Spending this year will be supported by direct payments sent earlier this month as part of President Joe Biden's USD1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan, the NRF said, as well as the expanding availability of vaccines which is driving consumer confidence higher.

Holiday spending should also get a boost from those who don't celebrate, with 52% of Americans who don't celebrate Easter still planning on taking advantage of holiday-related sales and spending an average of USD21.11, up from USD17.64 in 2020.
