MNI Europe Pi (Positioning Indicator): Shorts Set Across EGBs

Structural positioning for most European futures contracts is "flat", with the exceptions of Bobl and Gilt. Despite this, there have been some sizeable shifts in positioning over the past few weeks, with Schatz notably moving flat from "long". Shorts were set across each of the major EGB contracts last week.

  • GERMANY: Bobl is the lone long in our matrix, though off the longest levels seen this year. Schatz has shifted from long to flat positioning since late March post-roll and is verging on structural shorts. Conversely, Buxl has remained steady in flat territory since early March, and Bund has been more or less flat since the beginning of the year.
  • OAT: Positioning has been consistently flat over 2021 so far, flirting only briefly with long/short territory.
  • GILT: Gilt is the only European futures contract with short structural positioning, though we saw short cover last week.
  • BTP: futures positioning is flat, where it has been for most of the year - and a far cry from large longs seen most of 2020.
