MNI Inflation Insight-Feb 2022: Undoubtedly Broader Pressures

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

  • U.S. inflation was materially stronger than expected with underlying strength behind the firming of sequential inflation really standing out.
  • One of many standout features was shelter, where rents of primary residence accelerated with the fastest monthly increase since 1992 and owners' equivalent rent remained close to twenty-year highs.
  • In a sign of the breadth of inflationary pressures, the Cleveland Fed median measure rose to a new high in a series going back to 1983.
  • Elevated sequential inflation keeps the Fed on track for a potentially large hike on March 16 (+41bps priced) but as Barkin said late yesterday, there is plenty of data to come before then including one more payroll and CPI report.
