MNI BRIEF: BOJ Sakurai: To Mull Policy If Price Trends Change

TOKYO (MNI)

The Bank of Japan must watch the downside risks to the economy carefully and be ready to adjust policy if needed, Bank of Japan board member Makoto Sakurai said Wednesday.

Sakurai told reporters via an online conference, the BOJ facilities have so far produced the intended effects, restricting the number of bankruptcies and an helping the economic recovery, but noted there would need to be a change in thinking if there was a pick-up in bankruptcies or the economy turned down. He said he sees no imminent need of further easing, but said the BOJ will need to consider taking policy action if economy and price trends worsen.
