MNI Policy: China Calls Huawei Case Act of 'Suppression' by US

BEIJING (MNI) - Wang Yi, China's Minister of Foreign Affairs, said the U.S.
intended to suppress China including by having Canada detain the CFO of Huawei
Technologies Co. Here are the key things said at Wang's press conference as part
of the proceedings of the National People's Congress:
     - It is an "intentional political suppression" against specific Chinese
companies and individuals, rather than a simple judicial case, commenting on the
extradition case of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou in Canada. China will take all
necessary measures to protect not only the rights and interests of a company,
but also the rights of a country to legitimately develop its technology,
according to Wang.
     - It is unrealistic to disengage with China, because it means giving up
opportunities and disengaging from the future and the world. China and the U.S.
won't and shouldn't go to confrontation, as the interests of the two countries
are intertwined.
     - China believes the EU's policy on China will stay "independent, stable
and proactive."
     - The Belt and Road Initiative isn't a debt trap, nor a geopolitical tool.
So far, 123 countries and 29 international organizations have signed cooperation
documents.
     - China will hold the 2nd BRI forum in the second-half April. President Xi
Jinping will attend.
