MNI POLICY: US Commerce Dep't Extends Huawei License 45 Days

MNI (London)
WASHINGTON (MNI) - The U.S. Department of Commerce announced Thursday that
it would extend the Temporary General License (TGL) given to Huawei and its
non-U.S. affiliates for a further 45 days.
The Bureau of Industry and Security at Commerce made the announcement
saying the additional time is necessary for U.S. telecommunication providers
(especially in rural areas) to continue to operate while those companies
"identify alternatives to Huawei for future operation."
The TGL received by Huawei first went into effect on 20 May 2019, but this
is now the third time that license has been renewed by the Bureau. The new TGL
extension is set to expire 1 April 2020. The Bureau also said it would take the
next 45 days to consider any future TGL extensions.
The Bureau said the TGL "amends" the Export Administration Regulations "to
authorize specific, limited engagement in transactions involving the export,
reexport, and transfer of items" to Huawei.
