MNI POLITICAL RISK ANALYSIS-Gaza Conflict Risks MENA Fallout

The ongoing conflict between Hamas and Israel threatens to result in an all-out ground assault by Israeli forces into the Gaza Strip in a potential repeat of the 2014 Gaza War that lasted seven weeks and saw 73 Israelis (67 soldiers, six civilians) and between 2,000-2,500 Palestinians killed. In this article we examine the domestic political situation in Israel and how it could be impacted by a full conflict, the wider geopolitical ramifications of an Israeli assault on the Gaza Strip, and the implications of the escalating violence on financial markets.

The escalating conflict reached a peak over the last two nights when thousands of rockets have been fired by Palestinian militant group Hamas from the Gaza Strip into Israel, while the Israeli Air Force (IAF) launched retaliatory raids on weapons caches and Hamas targets in Gaza. The attacks, which resulted in extraordinary scenes of Israel's 'Iron Dome' missile defence system in action, have so far resulted in the deaths of at least seven Israelis and 83 Palestinians.
