Today's Major COVID-19 Headlines And Latest Data
- The UK has expanded its list of countries from which travellers will have to quarantine for 14 days on their return, including France and the Netherlands. The move comes as the six locations on the list record spikes in COVID-19 infections in recent days. France has threatened reciprocal measures in response. The move follows the imposition of a quarantine on July 25 on travellers returning from Spain.
- New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has extended the level three COVID-19 restrictions in the country's largest city, Auckland, for a further 12 days following an expansion in the outbreak cluster recorded on August 12 from 4 cases to 29. The rest of the country remains under level 2 restrictions, which have also been extended. Under the restrictions, all public places in Auckland are closed and people must work from home where possible.
- The French government has designated the capital Paris and the Bouches-du-Rhone region surrounding the city of Marseilles as 'red zones' due to the spike in new cases in the cities. The designation allows local authorities to impose stricter restrictions on areas such as wearing face masks in open areas, public transport, businesses, and gatherings in an attempt to halt the spread of the virus.
- Global increase in cases (daily) – Yesterday: 1.4%. Seven-day average: 1.3%
- Global increase in fatalities (daily) – Yesterday: 0.8%. Seven-day average: 0.8%
