Today's Major COVID-19 Headlines And Latest Data
- Pharma major Johnson & Johnson announced on July 30 that it has begun phase 1 human safety trials in the US for its experimental COVID-19 vaccine following successful tests on monkeys. The firm will now determine whether it is feasible to develop a single-shot vaccine rather than multiple injections, with mass phase 3 trials of both a single-shot and two-shot vaccine scheduled to begin in late September.
- The US state of Florida is set to close its COVID-19 testing centres from 1700ET on July 30 until further notice as Tropical Storm Isaias approaches. Emergency management officials have stated that as temporary structures are used as testing centres, they will not be able to withstand the 50mph winds expected. Florida has the second-highest number of confirmed cases in the US, exceeding 450,000.
- The Australian state of Victoria tallied another record-high number of new cases and fatalities on July 30, with 723 cases and 13 fatalities added to the total, despite the state having entered a state of lockdown on July 7. While Australia's outbreak remains very small in comparison to almost all other developed markets, state-level governments have launched drastic measures, with less-affected states barring entry to those from Sydney (in NSW) after a small spike in cases in the city. Victoria's borders remain shut to all surrounding states except for key workers.
- Global increase in cases (daily) – Yesterday: 1.2%. Seven-day average: 1.6%
- Global increase in fatalities (daily) – Yesterday: 0.8%. Seven-day average: 1.0%
