MNI POLITICAL RISK ANALYSIS – Global COVID-19 Tracker – Nov 12
COVID-19 Trends and Developments
- The number of fatalities related to COVID-19 in the United Kingdom reached 50,000 on November 11. The UK is the first European country to record 50,000 COVID-19 fatalities, with the country's mortality rate standing at 4.01 out of every 100 cases (the UK has 1,256,725 recorded cases as of November 11). Following the second spike in cases in the UK from September onwards, the number of daily fatalities from the virus has steadily climbed. In the week leading up to November 11 the UK recorded an average of 375 COVID-19 related fatalities per day, the highest seven-day average since 14 May.
- The United States registered another record increase in new cases on November 11, the second consecutive record new caseload, with 144,133 added to the total, with 65,368 Americans hospitalised with the virus. The sustained growth in new cases has seen New York state, the epicentre of the US' initial outbreak, reintroduce some restrictions in order to try to contain the spread of the virus. Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that gyms, bars and restaurants will have to close by 10pm and that people can only meet in groups of 10 or less.
- Australia has now gone over two weeks without recording a single COVID-19 related fatality, with the last recorded death on October 27. Since the city of Melbourne and the wider state of Victoria emerged from its strict lockdown in late-October, there has been little sign of a new wave of infections, with the new caseload averaging six per day nationwide over the past seven days as of November 11.
