COVID-19 Trends and Developments

• The United Kingdom recorded its highest one-day COVID-19 fatality total since June 5 on October 20, with 241 fatalities caused by the virus. The increase in hospitalisations and fatalities from the virus varies widely across the UK, with northern England hit hard. As of October 21, Greater Manchester and South Yorkshire have been put into the highest Tier-3 restrictions.
• The average daily new caseload recorded in the United States across the past seven days stood at 59,527 new cases per day on October 20. This is the fifteenth day in a row in which the seven-day average new caseload has increased in the US, and is the highest seven-day average increase since August 3.
• The Czech Republic continues to record a major spike in cases, with the 11,984 added to the total on October 20 the highest registered during the pandemic so far. The spike in cases in the Czech Republic is the most severe of any country worldwide in terms of new cases per head of population, but as of Sunday the Deputy PM said that the government would wait two weeks before the imposition of any full lockdown on the country.
