MNI POLITICAL RISK ANALYSIS – Global COVID-19 Tracker - Oct 27
COVID-19 Trends and Developments
- France reported 79,508 new COVID-19 cases on October 26 according to data from Johns Hopkins University, the highest 24 hour total to date for the country (including its overseas departements) during the pandemic. The rapid increase in cases has spurred President Emmanuel Macron to convene meetings of senior ministers both today and tommorow to discuss the potential of "the tougher measures under consideration to manage the health crisis", according to an official in PM Jean Castex's office speaking to AFP.
- The government of Belgium is set to decide by the weekend whether or not the country will go into a full nationwide lockdown equivalent to that seen at the start of the year. Health ministry spokesman Yves Van Laethem speaking yesterday stated that 809 of Belgium's 2,000 intensive care beds are full at present, a number that the ministry believes could rise to around 1,250 by the weekend and could be maxed out in two weeks.
- Colombia recorded its highest number of new COVID-19 cases since September 2 on October 26, with 9,167 added to the total. The country passed the one million confirmed cases mark on October 24, while the seven-day average new caseload has risen consecutively each day for the past week. The spike in cases has also seen the number of coronavirus-related fatalities increase. Colombia recorded an average of 178 fatalities from COVID-19 per day over the past week, the highest seven-day average since October 15.
