  • US Secretary of State Antony Blinken yesterday delivered his highly anticipated China speech yesterday, and although the speech didn’t contain any new policy positions, it outlined the administration’s ‘pivot to Asia’ and provided a blueprint for a future in which the US must invest heavily in Asia or accept being overtaken by Beijing in military and economic influence.
  • Blinken: ‘The People’s Republic of China is the only country with both the intent to reshape the international order and increasingly, the economic, diplomatic, military and technological power to do it.’
  • Ukrainian President Zelensky has criticised remarks from former US Secretary of State Kissinger at Davos suggesting that Ukraine should concede territory to achieve peace with Russia. ‘I get the sense that instead of the year 2022, Mr. Kissinger has 1938 on his calendar...'
  • 1300ET: Blinken will meet with Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto, with a joint press conference at 1415ET.
  • Before his meeting with Secretary Blinken, Haavisto will deliver remarks at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in an event entitled: ‘At a Crossroads: Finland's Perspectives on Transatlantic Security.'
  • Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) has told reporters that he is in discussions with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) to revive the climate and social spending bill Build Back Better.
