MNI POLITICAL RISK ANALYSIS – US Daily Brief 10-01-22

Executive Summary:

  • Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) remains estranged from his Democratic colleagues in Congress. Democrats had been hoping to engage Machin with talks on how to proceed with the challenging legislative programs of Build Back Better and voter rights but negotiations are yet to resume.
  • Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) has announced he will run for a third term. His seat will be aggressively targeted by Democrats in November's midterms.
  • The Senate and House are in session together for the first time since mid-December.
  • It’s a bumper week for diplomacy in Europe. Bilateral strategic talks between the US and Russia are underway in Geneva. There will be opportunities this week to deepen the discussions on a revised framework for European security when NATO and the Russian Council meet in Brussels on Wednesday, and then again at OSCE-Russia talks on Thursday.
