Monday 11 November:
- Japan: A special parliamentary session saw Shigeru Ishiba re-elected as prime minister despite his conservative Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) losing its majority in the 27 October snap general election. For the first time in three decades the vote went to a run-off after no PM candidate received an overall majority in the first round, with Ishiba beating centre-left Constitutional Democratic Party leader Yoshihiko Noda by 221 votes to 160. The poor election performance from the LDP means Ishiba is on thin ice with his LDP lawmakers and will face frequent difficulty in passing legislation as he seeks support from opposition parties.
- France-UK: French President Emmanuel Macron hosts British PM Sir Keir Starmer in Paris for Armistice Day commemorations and bilateral talks. The re-election of Donald Trump in the United States is likely to dominate conversations between the leaders of Western Europe’s only two nuclear powers. Trump’s stated plans to push NATO allies to contribute more to Europe’s defence will stretch the budgets of the French and UK governments given their positions as fourth and third-largest contributors respectively in monetary terms to NATO.
