MNI POLITICAL RISK ANALYSIS – Week Ahead Mar 29-Apr 4

All timings subject to change. Editor's Note: The next MNI Political Risk Week Ahead will be published Monday 12 April. We wish all our readers a Happy Easter.

Monday 29 March:

  • China: The Standing Committee of the 13th National People's Congress convenes its 27th session on 29-30 March. The main point of focus for the meeting is to review the recently approved changes to Hong Kong's electoral system. The changes to Annex I and Annex II of the Basic Law effectively limits the ability of pro-democrats from running for office in the Legislative Council or district councils.
  • United States: Opening arguments take place in the trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who is accused of killing George Floyd on video in an act that sparked mass protests and rioting across the US, which also spread to other countries. The case is set to be closely watched (it is being broadcast online due to the high level of interest), and the eventual conclusion of the trial could bring further unrest in cities across the US.
  • India: Public holiday for Holi festival.
