MNI POLITICAL RISK ANALYSIS – Weekly COVID-19 Tracker – Dec 8

COVID-19 Trends and Developments

  • On December 8, the United Kingdom became the first western country to begin immunisations of its population, with the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine being rolled out to those living in care homes and their carers. The US FDA is due to issue its judgement on the vaccine today, while the European Medicines Agency is due to give its results by the end of the month.
  • Several US states have either imposed, or are on the verge of re-imposing stricter lockdown conditions as cases rise and hospitalisations mount. Most of the population of California have been under a strict stay-at-home order since December 6, while in New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that stricter measures would be put in place if hospitalisations from the virus went above a certain threshold. On December 8, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf raised the prospect of restrictions as hospitalisations mount and risk overwhelming the state's health system.
  • Central and Eastern Europe continues to be hit hard by new infections and fatalities, with countries recording the highest number of new infections and fatalities per capita over the past week largely located in the region. Of the 10 countries recording the highest number of new cases per capita in the past week, seven were in the CEE region (including Georgia), while all of the top 10 nations recording the highest number of fatalities per capita over the last seven days were in Central, Southern, or Eastern Europe. See maps at the bottom of today's PDF (attached below) for new cases and fatalities by country.
