MNI Political Risk Publishes Election Briefing

THAILAND

MNI's Political Risk team has published an election briefing ahead of the 14 May vote. The article contains info on how the election works, the main parties and candidates, scenario analysis with assigned probabilities, and the latest opinion polling.

  • The vote could see a liberal prime minister come to power for the first time since the military seized control of the government in a coup d’état in 2014. The election is seen as important for the Thai political system. Strong results for the populist Pheu Thai party of Paetongtarn Shinawatra or the anti-militarism Move Forward Party of Pita Limjaroenrat could shift the country onto a more liberal path. However, it could also risk political unrest as the military-backing establishment seeks to avoid major political change.
