MNI POLITICAL RISK - Senate Stays In DC To Cont. Border Talks

US
  • Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) will keep the Senate in session today after a weekend of talks on a border security package made “significant progress” but failed to agree on a policy framework.
  • If a deal doesn't materialise early this week, then Schumer will likely dismiss the chamber until the new year, punting President Biden's USD$110 billion national security supplemental funding package into a hectic session of Congress where lawmakers will have around 10 days to avoid a partial government shutdown.
  • With the early voting for the Republican presidential primary kicking off in Iowa on January 15, the national security supplemental may permanently stall in Congress if it becomes politicised by 2024 presidential election campaigning.
  • US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair Gen. CQ Brown have arrived in Israel to convey more concerns from the White House about the ‘indiscriminate’ nature of Israel’s campaign against Hamas.
  • The Pentagon is considering a direct strike on Houthi targets in Yemen as the attacks affect commercial shipping in the Red Sea.
  • CIA Director Bill Burns will meet the Prime Minister of Qatar and his Mossad counterpart in Warsaw today to discuss a new deal to secure the release of Israeli hostages.
  • Poll of the Day: Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley (R) has continued to 'surge' in New Hampshire polling.
